The Beauty of Silver Jewelry

by admin on Apr.21, 2009, under 925jewelry

When buying fine jewelry, the three principal metals used in their design and making is silver, gold, and platinum.  By many counts, silver is the most popular of the three, and it has its own unique charm and beauty.  For one, gold may not be suitable to all skin color and shades.  In contrast, the warm white color of silver is suitable to a much wider range of skin tones, hair colors, and other physical attributes.  When it comes to high quality fashion jewelry however, it is clear that silver is the front runner.  A silver pendant reflects light and draws the attention of the audience.  It is at the same time, both sophisticated and classic, as well as hip and trendy.  Because silver is much cheaper than precious metals such as gold and platinum, you can afford to buy more than one piece that can be used individually or in the form of a set.  You can craft a truly individual look that expresses your personal sense of style and character by mixing and matching different pieces of silver jewelry.  Furthermore, the appropriate piece of silver jewelry can be used for both formal as well as casual looks.

Sterling silver chains and necklaces are some of the most popular pieces of silver jewelry in the market today.  When shopping for necklaces and chains, there are several issues that should be considered before making a purchase decision.  Silver chains have become quite popular and because of this increase in demand, designers have had the impetus to create more affordable, stylish and innovative designs.  At one time, jewelry was meant exclusively for fairer sex.  Today, you can buy silver jewelry for men, women and even children.  Silver chains fall under two main categories – those that are stand alone pieces, and those that will be accented with a pendant.  In the former category, the herringbone style is perhaps the most popular as it adorns the neck as a flat ribbon.  Because the chain is relatively flat, the jeweler can create a larger chain that is more conspicuous with a smaller amount of silver, and therefore more cost effective.  On the other hand, if you plan to use a pendant to accentuate the necklace, then you may prefer a simpler style of necklace so that the focus of the jewelry is the pendant and not the necklace.  In this particular case, you may want to choose a simple, cable style necklace that has interlocking links.  What ever style you choose, you cannot go wrong with the price and look that silver jewelry offers.

925 Silver Jewelry Charm

by admin on Apr.16, 2009, under 925jewelry

Personal accessories that adorned many Egyptian Pharaohs and the wealthy elite displayed various charms. Originally used by many common folk to bring good or alternatively ward off evil, gold charm jewelry evolved from setting basic stones and semi precious gems into fancy, elaborate items. Charms were also used to show what status they had accomplished in this life by what type of elaborate settings or gemstones were used. Since the Egyptians rarely lived past their 40’s, a heavy emphasis was placed on their place in the after life and attempt to control their fate through physical preparations was believed necessary. Charms were thought to be one such object that could be used to help the gods find them and take them to the proper place in life after death.
Charms were also used by Jewish scholars to encapsulate a small piece of paper within that had a part of the Jewish law written on it. From the earliest of its uses, charms had more of a practical use than an aesthetic use for many of its wearers. During the medieval era, many nobility as well as pheasants wore some form of gold charm jewelry or plainly made charms to help cast or break spells and supernatural powers that were believed to be affected by it. Others wore specially made charms to show a family heritage and position in life. It is said that during the later eras, interest in charms diminished because of the broader knowledge that was acquired through books that dispelled many superstitious notions. This personal decoration is not seen to become popular again in history until Queen Victoria revived it with her own special version of flamboyant accessories that caught on with the general public.
Many women carried their sweethearts picture in a small necklace or added a special charm to their bracelet in remembrance of a holiday together. A low ebb occurred in the demand for silver jewelry charm items throughout subsequent years, until another revival of interest in them occurred almost in conjunction with the preference for silver accessories of the last few years. The most notable influence on the charms as a major fashion accessory has been in Italy where famous designers have displayed modern, sleek charms in precious metals. Bracelets can be found that have links and interchangeable images that are in high demand throughout the world market among young and old alike. Some of the most popular charms that can be added to any linked bracelet or necklace piece are those associated with relationships or country loyalty. The American flag has seen a major surge in purchase for US consumers, but the heart symbol continues to be in demand world wide as the charm of choice for just about everyone.

What is 925 Silver?

by admin on Apr.14, 2009, under 925 Bracelets, 925 Earrings, 925 Necklaces, 925 Pendants, 925 Rings, 925jewelry

Most of us have purchased a piece of Sterling Silver; a pendant, charm, bracelet, earrings or even a picture frame, and have seen the “925″ stamped or engraved into the back of it, sometimes followed with the word “silver”. What exactly does this mysterious “925″ stamp mean? Way back, just a few centuries ago, a number stamped into a silver item was used more as a serial number for the maker, to guarantee its’ authenticity. Today, the stamped “925″ means something completely different.

Silver, especially Sterling Silver Jewelry, is usually stamped or engraved with “925″ on the back. The stamp can vary as either: “925″, “.925″, or “92.5″. What this means is actually very simple! It simply states that the item is 92.5% silver. The “925″ is a modern-day guarantee that the item you purchased is made of high, silver content and is of quality. So what’s in the other 7.5%?

The other 7.5% of the item is where you have to be careful. Depending on the country of origin, the other 7.5% could be nickel, copper, or even lead! Thankfully, for most of us in Europe and North America, the silver we purchase in necklaces, earrings, or bracelets, is probably made stronger through the use of copper. Copper is stronger and more durable, and even with the rising economy, still cheaper than silver. In the U.S., our silver is screened for content and most reputable jewelry makers are staying away from leaded silver made in China and other manufacturing companies. Always be sure to ask or look on the website before purchasing, just to be safe!

Caring for Sterling Silver Jewelry

by admin on Apr.14, 2009, under 925jewelry

Sterling silver jewelry is always made of silver that is 92.5% pure. It is composed of 925 parts of pure silver and 75 parts alloy, usually copper. Sterling silver jewelry always has the stamp of sterling silver on it, accompanied at times with the name of the designer or jewelry manufacturer. The word “sterling” is the most respected in the jewelry business today. Since pure silver by itself is too soft, another metal such as copper is added to it, to give the silver its added stiffness and other qualities. The resulting mixture is composed of 925 parts pure silver in every 1000. This proportion never varies. It is fixed by law. This is referred to as sterling and is often incorrectly called solid silver.

Sterling silver jewelry is made from this sterling silver, which is a white and highly reflective precious metal. It is of superior quality, which reflects in its look and feel. Although less durable than stainless steel and other precious metals, sterling silver is often employed in watches that coordinate or look like sterling jewelry. A protective coating may be added to prevent tarnish. Sterling silver jewelry is not very cheap, yet is also not beyond reach. It has a very distinctive look and can be easily distinguished. There is no mistaking the high reflective shine of this jewelry, which is one of its trademarks.

It adds a sophisticated charm to your personality. Sterling silver jewelry is very stylish and lends an incredible elegance to your entire look. The inedible stamp of quality along with the chic sophistication makes it a wonderful “must have” product. It is a very versatile ornament that crosses all barriers of age, cast, creed etc. It can be worn by anyone whether young or old. Some care has to be taken with any sterling silver jewelry that you own. This jewelry does tarnish with time. Tarnish on silver starts out as a yellowish tinge and is most easily removed at this stage. Silver tarnish progresses to a blackish purple coating becoming much more difficult to remove. Prolonged, unprotected storage is generally when tarnish occurs.

Usually, tarnish will not appear on jewelry that is worn on a regular basis. The gentle friction from wearing and the contact of oils on the skin will likely keep your jewelry bright and sparkling. Note though that taking certain medications can cause changes in skin acidity and may cause jewelry tarnishing.

To exercise good silver care, keep your jewelry free of tarnish by frequent cleaning. A simple diluted solution of mild dishwashing liquid and water can clean your silver jewelry. You can make your own cleaner by putting 2 tablespoons of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of salt in an aluminum pan - make sure it?s aluminum, that?s what makes this work - add hot water, mix it up and drop in your tarnished silver. A “magical” chemical removes the tarnish. Then, rinse and wipe dry.The presence of moisture will promote tarnish so, If possible, store your jewelry in a zip-loc plastic bag with anti-tarnish paper.

Light tarnish or oxidation film can be removed with silver polishing cloths. You may find them at supermarkets, hardware stores or jewelry shops. Heavy tarnishing will require commercially available polishing creams, or dip liquids. Use care with these, limiting the exposure of gemstones to silver cleaners as they may contain chemicals that can harm certain gemstones. Always rinse and dry jewelry thoroughly. I’ve found that using a hairdryer works very well to insure removal of moisture. Use a soft cloth to make sure no residual cleaner remains.

Note: Cream and dip liquid polishes will most likely remove tarnish and oxidation from your jewelry. They will also most certainly remove any decorative oxidation designs and patinas as well. Therefore, it’s best to keep these items free of tarnish through proper storage and the use of cleaning cloths. BUT avoid cleaning your sterling silver with tissue. Believe it or not, tissue can scratch your silver.

Avoid jewelry contact with abrasive soaps, chemicals, perfumes, hair sprays, dyes, etc. Remove your jewelry while washing, bathing, doing dishes, household chores or cleaning with chemicals. Silver is a relatively soft metal and can scratch, so don?t scrub with abrasive cloths or cleansers. Remove your jewelry before doing strenuous activities, exercise, sports, swimming (both ocean saltwater or chlorinated pools), to prevent scratching, denting or loss of gemstones. Remove jewelry before going to bed to avoid kinking or breakage.

Sterling silver jewelry has a unique air of class, sophistication and style surrounding it. It is a wonderful thing to own and also to give to people who matter. It says a lot about your personality and taste. Wearing sterling silver jewelry can immediately enhance your over-all persona. It is available for both men and women being one of those essential pieces of jewelry that you must have in your collection. Its versatile look allows it to be used for many occasions, and the feel and texture is quite fashionable, as well as glamorous. By knowing some of silver’s characteristics and taking a little extra care, your silver jewelry can give you a lifetime of enjoyment.
